We've done over 200 of these. And this is the first time we're going to tap the Bible. And this is from the New International Version James one, verses two through four. Consider a pure joy my brothers and sisters whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance, let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking in anything. I really like this quote, I did a backpacking trip. In high school, we were in Rocky Mountain National Park, it was through young life, it was a program called wilderness. And the guides that brought us on it gave the eight of us each a little segment of this little saying and when we were hiking, it was really difficult, we would say it and it was like we can persevere, we can get there anything. So whether you want to take the religious aspects of this, I think perseverance is something that if you have faith in yourself, or faith in a higher power, you can get through anything.

Larry

First thing we need to clear the air. This is from the book of James in the Bible, who has memorized the entire book of James, that would be my wife, she's memorized the whole thing. By the way, for the record, she was challenged once and also memorize the entire Footloose movie. So there you go.

Unknown Speaker

Do you know why she

Larry

did that? Because she was a fundamentalist at one point are pastors like, hey, by the way, I think she did it with her sister, too. You should remember, memorize James,

Andrew

that's great. I went I was taking a standardized test in junior high, I finished early. And I memorized 3.1415926535787. That's as far as I know. And pi.

Larry

You know what, whenever my kids are bored, I'm always like, you should just memorize pie out to the 50th desk ball, keep going kids. Back to your point. You know, of course, this is very profound. But whenever you're going through trials, you can't be happy in the moment, it's almost impossible, right?

Andrew

I think it is impossible. And I think that's what you're you can do with this verse. Or you can look to something outside of you saying if you have faith in something other than yourself or think to a bigger picture, it's like this sucks right now. But big picture, things will get better.

Larry

So well, that's, that leads to my next point, which is I feel like we always kind of debate this. It's perseverance versus are you going the wrong way? I mean, in life, you keep bumping up against things like just keep going, keep plowing through, or maybe you're going the wrong way.

Andrew

Right? Like if you're trying to break into Fort Knox, and you keep on coming into roadblocks. Like maybe you're not going down the right path. I guess that's interesting, too. But I guess maybe perseverance was something that was on my mind, because we're we moved we were renovating this house and we've done a lot of work. But there's still a mountain to climb. Like we don't have a kit. I went out this morning, I went out my front door. And I filled up the coffee carafe with the hose bib like I don't have a kitchen sink. And so it's like perseverance is kind of what I'm leaning on right now. And hopefully I'm going in the right direction.

Larry

Well, the thing about perseverance, right once you have persevered, whether you take a change and go a different direction, you can say like I gave it everything I had. So then you look back with a clear conscience. Is there anybody in life that has not had to persevere? Do you know anybody? I know this one guy who was a really good football player, not jack Johnson. By the way, jack Johnson. Those singers never awkward, you know the guy from so he grew up in Hawaii. Yes, his family needed someone to play guitar so they could sing song around the campfire. So they made him do it. He ends up going to UCSB because he's really smart. meets a model in college dater. Oh yeah, he starts singing because a big time rock star. I'm sure he's had some problems. But it's funny to think, is there anybody out there in life that's not had to persevere? Probably not. I

Andrew

mean, you could say waiting a line is some version of perseverance. Yeah, I guess kind of back to whether you're going the right direction or not. I, the guy that we interviewed earlier this week, Phil, who has Jesus love movies, he just started writing a book. And he was I mean, I don't know what his backstory was and what he was going through. But like sometimes even if you don't know, if you're going in the right direction, like you might not be in the right direction. But like, rather than sitting and dwelling in sadness, or pain, action is going to get you through so maybe action could be interchanged with perseverance.

Larry

No, yeah. Right. I mean, you're persevering because you put yourself on the line to do something right. A job, a business life, whatever. People that don't persevere, maybe have never gotten off their couch. Here's the other one where perseverance, when is perseverance kind of come up, come up against, like PTSD. You know, for instance, like, you know, I know this is kind of a bigger step there. But, you know, in Vietnam, people had to persevere. Or if you're a foster kid you've had to go through through all sorts of things. One is perseverance give you PTSD, where you simply can't get over all that stuff that you've kind of come into contact with.

Andrew

Yeah, I don't know where that line is on perseverance, making you a better person or making you a jaded person. I mean, yeah, like, if you, if you never get to the other side of it, at some point, maybe you can get worn down. But that's not really a positive message. But I guess it's the reality of it, too. Like, if people are just mean to you all the time, and you never have anything positive coming your way, then why would you be happy?

Larry

I feel like just this this word perseverance in this quote from the Bible is like, like quintessentially American, right? If you think about Americans, moving west, coming from East across America, perseverance, it was just keep going, pick yourself up by the bootstraps. Perseverance is like a really true American sort of idea.

Andrew

And I guess just the fact that this is from the Bible, we should get back to that, like the religious aspect of it. It's like testing your faith. Like, if if you're a Christian, or you believe in Christianity, like you put your faith in God, or if you believe in something else. It's kind of like the A like high, a higher power, belief in a higher power is going to get you through it. That's another thing that like takes you out of yourself being like, this isn't 100% on you, you're going through something difficult, and you're not alone. And I think that's kind of what that's saying,

Larry

well, we're going big into spiritual this week. The only thing I would say to that is I think sometimes with like the evangelical idea that you can't question God, like, if something's going wrong in your life, and you're like, right there like that you cannot quit. You gotten this plan for you. You know, I think God's bigger than that. I think you actually, in a moment of trial, you could actually kind of question the big picture, and God would be okay with that. Yeah,

Andrew

I want to say that it's a nuanced thing, but Nicole always tells me that nuance is one of my bingo words. And so I'm a little bit shy on the trigger with that word now, but it is a nuanced situation.

Larry

And I just say the last thing. So Karen, memorize James and then she was challenged to memorize the whole Footloose movie. It was a game that we played one New Year's and I might challenge true or not, I was challenged to go to a cockfight. If I had to go literally find a cockfight. And go to a cockfight. Like in the Central Valley, what I did the Bay Area Yeah, like you know, stocked in Fresno wherever I like to start that process. Did

Andrew

you Google how to find a cockfight? Or did you start asking around

Larry

I googled that and immediately like two FBI agents showed up at my house.

Andrew

Well, if you were to go to a cockfight, please reach out. You can find us at reposting podcast on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. I'm Andrew Keller for a little Jerry Seinfeld saying thanks for stopping by.
