I get tired of “under 40” lists. - Doug Murano

This is re posted.

Hello, and welcome to reposted. In the next few moments we'll be breaking down the posts that we have found to be inspiring, interesting, or otherwise entertaining quotes that catch our eye and we feel are worth a deeper look. Thank you for stopping by. Today we're gonna be focusing on the age difference between Larry and I Larry's over 40 under 40. I came across this quote from an editor from North Dakota His name is Doug Murano. He says this, I get tired of quote under 40 lists show me someone who got their PhD at 60 after losing everything. Give me a 70 year old debut novelist who writes from a lifetime of love and grief give me calloused hands and tender hearts. I think there definitely is a focus in life on the shiny object person who's the anomaly is like, Oh, this, these 40 people under 40 are doing so much with their lives. But like you don't say, hey, I want the youngest surgeon to do a bypass surgery on my heart. Like in everyday practice, I think we want people with more experience with the media or our fascination with with stuff like that with the anomaly gets highlighted more often than not.

Larry

You could you could argue though, that and that's the whole problem with everything right now. Right? Everybody just wants a headline so that people will talk about it. The only reason they come up with this under 40 list is so that people will talk about it. You know what I mean?

Andrew

Right? I mean, but there is something. I guess this isn't that profound, but I think it's just it. I wouldn't have pointed this out. But I think getting a PhD, it's 60 years old is so much more impressive than getting a PhD going from high school to college to a PhD. I think doing it while you have life. When you're a mother of three, and you work at CVS, and you have multiple jobs, and you just got off the Serengeti, getting your PhD is impressive.

Larry

I mean, this quote is great in that who would not want Obi Wan Kenobi giving them advice versus Mark Zuckerberg. Of course. Of course you want Obi Wan Kenobi giving you because of his life experiences and all that he's seen, of course that and here's what I just think it's fascinating is that these young whippersnappers, like Zuckerberg and Dorsey are literally running these platforms, which are controlling our systems in the world. And they have so little life experience, like we should not these people should not be running those things.

Andrew

Yeah. And it's in the it's in the headlines so much right now talking about what they can and cannot censor. Because the the tech companies are making these dishes decisions being like, the general public should know this. Or we should put an asterisk by this because we don't think it's correct. And maybe we should have Obi Wan deciding what information gets filtered and what doesn't.

Larry

You know, but it's also funny is that, um, jack Dorsey of Twitter is actually trying to look like Obi Wan effect trying to fool us that he's some rich dude who's like living in a cave and has all this knowledge, but he does it. He's just like a 32 year old dude is gonna,

Andrew

I think he's closer to 40. I think you're just remembering when he became younger Berg's, I think a year or two younger than me. I'm getting up there.

Larry

But I mean, you get the point there. Like if there was a person who was like a cagey newspaper guy who'd worked at the Washington Post for seven years, the social media platforms would be incredibly different because they filter information different than a 32 year old, who's, by the way, telling us we need all this information all the time. And basically, we're not going to filter any of it even if it's a bunch of Nazi propaganda. Is this maybe

Andrew

a take on white collar jobs? Because I think this only these lists are only for white collar jobs. It's like 40, under 40 in tech for entrepreneurs, maybe for for bankers, but like, construction, there's not a 40 under 40. Carpenter, my there should be under my pipe fitters 32. And he's crushing it right now. Like,

Larry

dude, but I mean, so it looks like anything, right? I mean, I'm sure if you talk to a carpenter who'd been doing it for 70 years, they probably have about 1000 awesome hacks that they've invented over their career, as opposed to some young whippersnapper who can do it quicker. But maybe it's not as good or well done.

Andrew

Yeah. But I mean, is that a referendum on how we view white collar jobs like because we're not because college is what you do? Like the trades are not the cool path to go down? I, I don't know. I'm just kind of thinking this through as we're talking. But

Larry

what's definitely less sexy, right? For sure.

Unknown Speaker

Right? But it's

Larry

not that it's not as important but it's just less sexy, right? It's not gonna get the clicks Andrew

Unknown Speaker

Yeah, who wants to

Andrew

do that type of a list for radio, radio guys snipe all

Larry

the time all the time. Guess who's never on that list this guy. I love me a cagey veteran. I wish I had Obi Wan Kenobi in my closet. I could pull them out at any I guess I could use the Force, but I do like the cagey veterans.

Andrew

Yeah. Also, I think 20 year old Morgan Freeman might not be the narrator that he is today if he didn't have the life experience to get his voice dialed in.

Larry

That's funny. He probably does the right I love that analogy. He does you hear his wisdom in his voice? What would 20 years ago find 20 year old Morgan Freeman voice?

Andrew

Well, if you have Morgan Freeman Shawshank audition, please reach out. You can find us at reposting podcast on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Andrew Keller for Andy to friends and thanks for stopping by.
